The SBBS mini sustainability healthcheck

One of the requirements of many projects funded by the EU is that we have to show that everyone who collaborates with us is aware of and making improvements to their understanding of and engagement with the so called ‘cross-cutting themes' of environmental management, equality and diversity and in Wales the Welsh language.

These are all important components of sustainability and meeting the target is not an optional extra. In order to make this as seamless as possible for all concerned several projects are partnering with Bangor University's Sustainability specialists Synnwyr Busnes Business Sense (SBBS) based at the Welsh Institute for Natural Resources. SBBS has wide ranging experience of engaging with business and industry to raise awareness and understanding of sustainability in a way that goes beyond ticking boxes.

So what can you expect?

If you are participating with a Bangor University convergence project you may be sent a link to the SBBS mini healthcheck and asked to fill a very short questionnaire. Within a few days of completion, if required, you will be sent a simple environment policy, equality and diversity policy and a Welsh language policy statement as a first step. You will also be invited to join our network to receive periodic updates on sustainability issues.

Perhaps this is as far as you will need to go in the first instance. However, the SBBS team is there to help you make business sense of sustainability. If you need additional help to develop a more sophisticated Environment Management System, knowing more about waste management or sustainable buildings or even calculating your CO2 emissions you will have access to a SBBS team member who will be able to assist directly or signpost you to other providers.

We look forward to working with you towards a sustainable future.

"In May 2008 we had a sustainability health check by SBBS, a specialist business support service in sustainable development, based at Bangor University. The report says: "Plas Efenechtyd Cottage B&B achieved very good scores for the economy (84%), social (73%) and environmental (71%) dimensions". We were pleased to have our efforts recognised and the report has given us many ideas for further improvement."
