Case study: The Knobbly Carrot Food Company
The Knobbly Carrot Food Company is an organic food company in Lampeter, Ceredigion.  They produce a range of soups, pasta sauces, sandwich fillings and ready to eat salads which are all certified organic by the Soil Association.  They have won many awards for their products as they are produced from fresh organic vegetables, locally sourced where possible and in small batches which gives a home cooked wholesome taste.

Stephanie Bond from the Knobbly Carrot, Lampeter came to a SBBS Sustainability road show event, took detailed notes, incorporated them into a project proposal and succeeded in getting a grant to help with product development.  Since then they have launched a new retail range of award winning organic soups in 500g eco-friendly pouches.  They undertook research (working in partnership with Ecodesign Wales) on the packaging market for over 12 months in order to find a more eco-friendly alternative to the plastic pots which were used previously.  The result is that they now use a plastic pouch which uses 44% less plastic than a conventional tub.  They are, therefore, lighter, smaller, easy to use, pack more conveniently, have an extended shelf life of 28 days, use less space and are altogether much better.

The Knobbly Carrot Food Company considered the impact of all their business decisions on sustainability and the results of the SBBS sustainability health check showed that they scored highly on social and environmental components as well as the economic components.  According to Stephanie (the company director)
“We are proud of what we are doing.  It's been hard work but I think we have proven that business can be constructive not destructive.  We are making delicious, award winning food without destroying the planet!”

" Since taking part in SEACAMS, we have taken the Business Sustainability Healthcheck from SBBS which has helped us recognise as a company areas in which we could improve, specifically sustainability. It has certainly been worthwhile and of benefit to our business. Swansea Watersports are currently submitting some grant applications and taking part in the healthcheck is likely to contribute towards their successful award."
